It's here. The first ever 48-team FIFA World Cup kicks off tonight at the Estadio Azteca — the storied Mexico City bowl becoming the first stadium to stage a World Cup opening match for the third time. Over the next five weeks, 104 matches across the United States, Canada and Mexico will crown a champion. These are the opening-week fixtures to plan your evenings around — all times Doha.

Tonight, June 11 — Mexico vs South Africa, 22:00

The opener at the Azteca, where Pelé and Maradona lifted their World Cups. The hosts carry the hopes of a football-mad nation in front of more than 87,000 fans.

June 12 — Canada vs Bosnia & Herzegovina, 22:00

Group B begins — and that means Qatar's group. Co-hosts Canada open in Toronto, and the result directly shapes what Al Annabi will need from their three matches. Essential viewing for every Qatari fan.

June 13 — Qatar vs Switzerland, 22:00

The one that matters most to us. Qatar's golden generation opens its second World Cup against the group's top seed in the Bay Area — prime time in Doha. A first ever World Cup point or win is the mission.

June 13/14 — Brazil vs Morocco, 01:00

Five-time champions against the 2022 semi-finalists at the stadium that will host the final. Comfortably the heavyweight tie of the first round.

June 14 — England vs Croatia, 23:00

A rematch of the 2018 semi-final, under the roof in Arlington, Texas. Two golden generations, one early statement.
